Keratoconus

Keratoconus

If you are having more trouble seeing than usual in addition to other symptoms, it may be due to keratoconus. This eye condition develops when your cornea becomes thin and eventually becomes cone-shaped. This distorts your vision and causes other symptoms to occur as well. At Dr. Jennifer Yu Optometry Centre in Richmond, BC and Greater Vancouver area, we provide eye exams to accurately diagnose keratoconus and offer prompt treatment to preserve your vision. Before visiting us, learn more about the symptoms of keratoconus below:

Symptoms of Keratoconus

As keratoconus develops, your vision might become more blurry or distorted. Along with that, you might notice more glare and become more sensitive to light, which can interfere with daily activities like driving. This condition might also require updated eyeglass prescriptions more often. Your vision may also become cloudy or worse all of a sudden. In this case, you might have scarring on your cornea that might require surgery.

Causes of Keratoconus

While the actual cause of keratoconus is unknown, your risk of having it might increase due to certain risk factors. You can develop the condition due to a family history, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, asthma, or hay fever. If you rub your eyes frequently, it can also lead to keratoconus.

Diagnosing Keratoconus

When you come in for an eye exam, our eye doctor will examine your cornea and run tests to determine a diagnosis. Our optometrist might do an eye refraction test, slit-lamp exam, keratometry, or computerized corneal mapping to evaluate your corneas. If we confirm that you do have keratoconus, we will discuss available treatments with you.

Treatments for Keratoconus

Corrective lenses can help improve your vision. Our optician can recommend eyeglasses or contacts that will help you see better. You might need scleral lenses, hybrid lenses, hard contact lenses, or other special lenses, depending on how severe your condition is. It is important to keep in mind that you might need to have your prescription updated more often when you have keratoconus. Our eye doctor may also recommend corneal collagen cross-linking to slow the progression of the condition and corneal surgery to help improve your vision.
